Tihar/ Deepawali....

Tihar, the festival of lights is one of the most dazzling of all Hindu festivals. In this festival we worship Goddess Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth. During the festival all the houses in the city and villages are decorated with lit oil lamps. Thus during the night the entire village or city looks like a sparkling diamond. This festival is celebrated in five days starting from the thirteenth day of the waning moon in October. We also refer to tihar as 'Panchak Yama' which literally means 'the five days of the underworld lord'. We also worship 'yamaraj' in different forms in these five days. In other words this festival is meant for life and prosperity.
Goddess Laxmi is the wife of almighty Lord Vishnu. She was formed from the ocean and she has all the wealth of the seas. She sits on a full-grown lotus and her steed is the owl. On the third day of the festival at the stroke of midnight she makes a world tour on her owl looking how she is worshipped.
There is a story, which tells why this revelry is celebrated so widely. Once there was a king who was living his last days of life. His astrologer had told him that a serpent would come and take his life away. The king did not want to die so he has asked the astrologer if there was any way to escape death. The king was advised to sleep with lit oil lamps all around his bed and decorate the palace with oil lamps on laxmi puja day. So goddess laxmi would talk to the serpent not to take his life. It did happen, the serpent was convinced by goddess laxmi. The serpent took the king to Yama Raj and told him that it was not yet the king's time to come to the underworld. So Yama Raj opened his ledger and in it the kings remaining age was written zero, but the serpent cleverly put seven before zero. Thus the king lived for seventy more years. So onwards tihar is widely celebrated worshipping the underworld and goddess laxmi.
The first day of tihar is known as 'Kag tihar', crows day. Crow is an underworld henchman. On this day crows are offered food on a plate made out of leaves in the morning before anyone in the house takes in food. In the kingdom of Nepal crow is not killed cause as a legend says that one crow had happened to drink the water of life. Thus you can see crows everywhere sitting without the fear of human beings. Crow the messenger of death is honoured on the first day of tihar.
The second day is called 'Kukur tihar', dogs day. A dog plays many roles in our society. We have dogs in our houses as guardian of the house. As the legend also says that there is a dog at yama's gate guarding the gate to the underworld. The dog is also the steed of the fearful Bhairab, the god of destruction. So on this day a big red tika is put on a dog's forehead and a beautiful garland around the neck. After worshipping the dog, it is given very delicious meal. This day the saying 'every dog has his day' comes true; for even a stray dog is looked upon with respect. We pray to the dog to guard our house as he guards the gate of the underworld and to divert destruction away from our homes. On this day you can see dogs running around with garlands on their neck.
Tihar - The festival of Light. The third day is the most important day of the festival. It is called 'Laxmi puja', The day when we worship goddess of wealth. On this day, early in the morning the cow is worshipped. Tika is put on her head and a garland around her neck then she feasts with delicious food. A cow also symbolises wealth and she is the most holy animal for Hindus. Cow is the national animal of Nepal.
In the evening goddess laxmi is worshipped. Days before the house are cleansed and decorated. For goddess likes clean and tidy places. In the evening a small potion of the house out side the main door is painted red with red mud and an oil lamp is lit on it. A pathway is made from here to the place where the old money box and valuables are kept in the house that is the puja room. All the Nepalese have a box where from generation to generation money is put every year worshipping goddess laxmi. This money is never used unless extreme emergency. The entire house is decorated with lit oil lamps in every doors and windows. Laxmi, goddess of wealth is worshipped performing the traditional rituals and when the rituals are over then gambling in the house starts. This is a festival when gambling is not illegal. On this day throughout the evening groups of girls come to houses singing song of praise of the goddess and they are taken as guests and given gifts. This day the entire place is lively through out the night.
The fourth day is bit different. Today the things you worship depend on your specific cultural background. Normally most of the people perform 'Guru puja', ox worshipping. The ox is worshipped with tika, garland and then a delicious meal is fed to it. On the other hand people who follow lord Krishna perform 'Gobhardan puja'. These people build a small hill made out of cowdung and put some grass on it then do puja on it. This puja symbolises the act of lord Krishna when he lifted the gobhardan hill and saved millions of people and cows from floodwater.
If you belong to the Newar community, you perform 'Mha puja' which literally means worshipping yourself. The newar community people are worshipping life by doing puja on themselves. On this very day the newar New Year also starts. Nepal has many minor community calendars and newar calendar is one of them but the nation follows the Bikram Sambat calendar.
The last day of tihar is 'Bhai tika', putting tika on your brothers by your sisters. The royal astrologer gives the appropriate time to put the tika through the national radio a day before and the entire nation abides by it. Even his majesty receives tika from is sisters. When his majesty receives tika a thirty-one-gun salute is given to honour the function. At this moment the entire nation will be observing bhai tika. The main theme behind bhai tika is the sisters praying for their brother's long life from Yama Raj, god of the underworld.
The most exotic and dazzling festival comes to an end after these five magnificent days of worship and honour to the goddess laxmi and the underworld kingdom.

zipflyer 4

Dashain....A festival of victory over devils.

There is no doubt that Nepal is a land of festivals and Celebrations. We celebrate more than 100 festivals in a year. Different caste have their different culture and festivals. But there is one festival that is celebrated by the whole nation together, which last for half of the month, that festival we called is DASHAIN.
Dashain is national festival for Nepalese. Though it is specially celebrated by Hindus,  Dashain fever touches every Nepalese, does not matter they are hindu or not.
Why Dashain is Celebrated?
Dashain is a festival celebrated in name of goddess Durga for fifteen days. We, Nepalese have a strong belief that in the tenth day of dashain, goddess Durga has slayed the demon Mahisasur, who was terrorising the earth in the guise of a brutal water buffalo. Rest of the nine days was the battle period between goddess Durga and demon Mahisasaur. The killing of Mahisasur by goddess Durga symbolises the victory of truth, positivity and joy against the evil deed. The last five days is the celebration of this victory, alone with the blessing of goddess Durga.
What we do in Dashain?
The  first day of Dashain is Ghatasthapana, which means pot establishing. On this day all the hindu family, plant the seed(jaun)  for “Jamara”, which is expected to grow within the 10 days of Dashain celebration. This is done to request Durga for her blessings. Following seven days are passed by regular ritual. seventh day is called Fulpati. In fulpati, royal kalash filled with holy water, banana stalks, jamara and sugar cane tied with red cloth is carried by Brahmans on a decorated palanquin under a gold tipped and embroidered umbrella. After this the eight and nineth day is called Astami and Navami. On these days, machines, shops, equipments, vehicles are worshipped. Sacrificing of animals is also done in these two days. Finally the tenth day is Dashami. On this day we take tika and jamara from our elders. along with tika, dakshina is also given, which is even more famous among kids. On the rest of the five days, we visit our relatives for tikas.
Activities on Dashain
In Dashain, people do lots of things. Since all the office and organisation are closed, people will have lots of free time. the major activities, is shopping. There is a saying that, in Dashain one should wear a new attire and hence we can see people engaged buying dresses. even in the occasion of dashain they coloured their home, buy new vehicles etc. Playing cards, buying goats and sacrificing them, flying kites are other secondary things, but still very much popular activities that is done in Dashain. Beside all these, the major activity that we only do in dashain, is swinging on the bamboo;s swings. This can be only be seen in Nepal at the time of Dashain, peope swinging on the bamboo’s swing.
Dashain is the festival of love, sharings, belonginess, prosperity followed by all the positive and good things. We are now on the way to Dashain. People have start making their plan for dashain. It will be very much fun and lots of excitement. Hence i wish a happy Dashain to every Nepalese all over the world.
Happy Dashain 2069 B.S.

Teej in Nepal

Teej is the fasting festival of women in Nepal. It falls in the month of August or early September. Married women observe Teej fast to honor Lord Shiva and for long and healthy life of their husband. Unmarried girls also observe fast on this day for a good husband. Teej celebrations lasts for three pious days. Traditional dances and songs form an important feature of Teej celebrations. Red color is considered auspicious for women observing Teej fast and so most of them dress up in red or bridal clothes.

Teej Celebrations
Teej is an annual festival of Nepali women. The festival is celebrated with utmost dedication and love by the women in Nepal. Preparations for the festival begin well in advance. Fabric stores, sarees and suit outlets are stocked with the bridal red color fabric. Women spend most of the time shopping when Teej is near.

Teej festival celebrations are carried further with sumptuous feasts and traditional performances. On this day, women dress up beautifully. They clad themselves in red colored apparels, wear glass bangles, heavy ornaments and apply henna. Teej gives women an opportunity to dress like the newly wed. They worship the epitome of divine marriage - Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, for longevity and prosperity for their husband and family.

Three Days of Teej
Teej is a three-day-long festival in Nepal and each day has its own significance.
  1. First day is called 'Dar Khane Din', the day to make merry.
  2. Second day is a 'fasting day'.
  3. The third day is called 'Rishi Panchami' in Nepal which is a day to perform Teej Puja.
Dar Khane Din
The first day of Teej in Nepal is called the 'Dar Khane Din'. On this day, the womenfolk dressed in the finest clothed gather at one place and perform traditional dance and sing devotional songs. A special food called 'dar' is eaten. Celebrations continue till midnight after which the 24-hour-long fast begins.

Fasting Day
The second or the fasting day of the Teej festival is dedicated to pujas and prayers. The holy Pashupatinath temple is thronged by women in red sarees to offer prayers to Lord Shiva. Women gather in the temple and circumambulate the Lingam (phallic symbol of the Lord) adorned with flowers, sweets and coins. The beautifully decorated idols of Shiva and Parvati are offered fruits and flowers to seek blessings of the divine spirits. Lighting of an oil lamp is very important part of the puja ceremony. It is said that the oil lamp should be kept lit all night to avoid bad omen.

Rishi Panchami
The third day of the Teej Festival is called Rishi Panchami. On this day, the seven sages of the Hindu pantheon are worshiped by women in a belief that it will cleanse all sins of the previous year. Womenfolk take a holy bath with red mud found on the roots of the sacred Datiwan bush, along with its leaves. After three hours of rigorous cleansing, they come out purified and absolved from all sins. After this they sit in a semicircle while a priest sitting in the middle chants devotional prayers.

Bal Divas/Children’s Day in Nepal

Bal Divas/Children's Day is a public holiday in Nepal.

Bal Divas/Children’s Day in Nepal: September 14

Nepal celebrates Bal Divas/Children’s Day as a public holiday.
Children’s day or Bal Divas day is created everywhere in order to honor the children and minors. It is celebrated in Nepal and all over its kingdom on August 20. This is the day that children get full freedom to enjoy a play. It is a special day only for the children. This day reminds everyone to look after the welfare of the people and to tell them to live as per the dream and quality Chacha Nehru had.
The children’s day that that was celebrated on August 20 changed to September 14 and now we have Father’s Day on this day. In fact, this dayis also known as Gokarna Aunsi (Father Day).

Nepal History of Bal Divas/Children’s Day

Initially, this was the only day when Nepal celebrated Children’s Day. This day is celebrated in India on November 14 since it’s day when the independent India’s first Prime Minister, Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru, was born. He loved children a lot. In fact, he loved all the children. It is a day to make a child happy and even to remember the birthday of the great leader who has changed the newborn country to a world power.
The father is our strength, respect and the support of the family. This day is celebrated in Nepal and around the world even though it may not be the same day as Nepal celebrates. Nepalese have a lot of respect for the father and they make this day a very exciting and memorable one for the father.

Nepal Bal Divas/Children’s Day Customs and Traditions

Nepal is the land of festival. All around the year, festivals take place. Nepalese take ritual baths and worship different Gods & Goddesses. They even visit temples and observe fasting. You can even find them undertaking feasting on the festival day.
There is an organization in Nepal for the welfare of the children. The name of the organization is Nepal Children’s’ Organization (Bal Mandir) and schools. This is an organization, which works day and night for the needy children to help them get a good education, food, shelter etc. There are camps organized for the children that help them learn new things and explore nature. It also helps them socialize with the outside world and thus this interaction helps their development.
To make this day a memorable one for the children, many seminars, meetings, sports, fairs etc., are organized in consideration for the childrens’ welfare and growth. Even the schools organize different events where different competitions take plac to test the ability of the children.
On this day the son and daughter come with a lot of delicacies and gifts for their father. After gifting, the son receives blessing from their father by touching his feet, and the daughter receives blessing by touching her father’s hand. The people even worship the Gokarneswor Mahadev on this day. All the festivals and celebrations in Nepal maintain the rich cultural heritage of this divine land.

POKHARA

The Himalayas form the highest, sheerest rise from subtropical base to icy peaks of any mountain range on earth, and nowhere is the contrast more marked than at POKHARA (Pok-hur-ra). Spreading down a lush valley to the lakeshore, on clear days it boasts a nearly unobstructed view of the 8000m-plus Annapurna and Manaslu ranges, just 25km to the north. Dominating the skyline, in beauty if not in height, is the double-finned 6997m summit of Machhapuchhre ("Fish-Tailed") -- so named for its twin-peaked summit, though only one is visible from Pokhara.

Nepal's main resort area lolls beside Phewa Tal (Phewa Lake), well outside the actual town of Pokhara. This is Nepal's little budget paradise: carefree and culturally undemanding, though extremely touristy, with a steaks-and-cakes scene rivalling Kathmandu's. New businesses pop up like mushrooms after each monsoon, and disappear just as quickly; cheap places go upmarket, great views get blocked, and what's hot today may be dead tomorrow. No guidebook can keep up with all the changes, so take all recommendations with a pinch of salt.

As the main destination served by tourist buses and internal flights, Pokhara is usually the first place travellers venture to outside the Kathmandu Valley. For trekkers, it's the gateway to Nepal's most popular trails; for rafters and kayakers, it's Nepal's river-running headquarters; for paragliders and mountain bikers it's one of the best spots on earth; and for everyone else, it's the most relaxing place in Nepal that you don't have to trek to get to. Day-trips around the Pokhara Valley beckon, and if Pokhara town is short on temples and twisting alleys, you might find that a relief after Kathmandu's profusion. At 800m above sea level it's both cooler than the plains in summer and warmer than Kathmandu in winter; it's also less protected from the prevailing rains and receives about twice as much as the capital.
